Properties of Lubricating Oil


Ever since the old era, many fluids, including water, there have been many lubricants used to reduce the abrasion, friction, and wear occurring between the motorized parts. These days, lubricating oil, or lube oil, is the most frequently used emollient due to its variety of probable usage. The two fundamental groups of lube oil are inorganic and synthetic. Mineral oils are purified and obtained from naturally available petroleum, or crude oil. Synthetic oils are human-made polyalphaolefins that are hydrocarbon-based polyglycols or ester oils. Lube oil is hauled out from crude oil, which goes through an initial distillation procedure (sedimentation) before it is propelled into fractionating masts. · Strength: The lubricant must possess to be robust enough to evade metal interaction and capture under hefty loads.

· Chemical Solidity: The lube oil must not respond to the chemicals present in the surfaces of the container they are used.

· Dispensation Point: It must be as low as possible to let the lubricant flow through at even moderate temperatures.

· Flash Point and Fire Point: The flash point and fire point must be as high as possible so that it does not catch fire while inside the cylinder.

· Nullification: The lube oil must not have a propensity to form residue by retorting with air, liquids, gas or any products of ignition.

· Cloud: The lowest possible temperature during which the oil turns from a fluid state to a flexible or hard state is known as the cloud point. In a few cases, the oil turns out to be gray during the beginning of solidification.

· Colour: This trial is not so essential apart from testing the consistency of any particular grade of oil.

· Emulsification: An emollient tend to separate when mixed with water. The emulsification index denotes the trend of mixing capacity.

· Specific Gravity: Particular gravity of greasing oil differs significantly and therefore must not be considered as the primary indication of its lubricating property.

· Neutralization Index: Oil usually contains froths, if not separated during the purifying process; it might harm the neutralization number.
